The Marine Parks Authority and Australia’s environmental minister, Greg Hunt, have approved a proposal for an additional dump site for the Abbot Point coal terminal expansion within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. This expansion will make Abbot Point one of the largest coal ports in the world.
“It’s important to note the seafloor of the approved disposal area consists of sand, silt and clay and does not contain coral reefs or seagrass beds.” - Dr. Reichelt, authority chairman
Just because you are not dumping this disgusting mud directly on the reef does not mean there will be no impact! This is the Great Barrier Reef we are talking about; one of the 7 natural wonders of the world, not to mention an incredibly fragile and sensitive ecosystem!
